Mottram pace

Isn’t Craig Mottram a gun!

I suppose that everyone saw the news yesterday, where he broke the Aussie 10km road racing record. From the Australian newspaper, “Craig Mottram broke the Australian 10km road racing record in finishing third in the prestigious San Silvestre Vallecana race in Spain today (AEDT). Mottram clocked a time of 27min 39sec through the streets of Madrid, stripping 15 seconds off the mark he set in the same race two years ago.”

This got me to thinking, and a few quick calculations showed this to be 2:45.9 Min/Km pace, which is more than twice as fast as my average running pace for December. Converting Craig’s pace to Kms/Hr it is 21.7, which is also faster than my average speed for December on my bike.

All I can say is “Respect”, and bow down in front of the man.

I had a good ride on my bike yesterday (New Years Day), a 35km spin from Greenvale through West Meadows, up the Shankland Valley bike path into Roxburgh Park and back again. Covered the 35km in just over an hour and a half at about 23km/hr – yep, I would have beaten Craig Mottram on this ride :-)

My after-work run tonight (just on the bike paths and roads around Greenvale where I live) was not as good as planned – I set out with the goal of a non-stop run (no walk breaks), but was no-where near prepared for the 32 degree heat. I was not hydrated properly – got the dry mouth etc. only a couple of kilometres in. Wasn’t prepared in another way too (didn’t go before I left) and the stomach pains kicked in later in the run too. Anyway, ended up with a 13.8km run at 5:37 pace. Planning is so important isn’t it!

Another thing I’ve decided after tonights run is I need to make a priority of my Fuel Belt purchase for hot days like today. Have some Chrissy present money to spend on one, looked in Paddy Palin on the weekend but they didn’t have any in my size.

Blkbox, thanks for noticing the West Ham logo in my avatar. I am a die-hard WHFC follower in the Premier League, have been since I was a whipper-snapper, but boy it’s a hard job, as they bounce from Premier to First Division so regularly. I follow Geelong in the AFL and England in the cricket too, anyone detect a pattern forming here? Should I get that “L” tatooed on the forehead now?

Mottram might be running twice your pace, but it is four times my pace. When he finishes 10km I’m still in my THIRD!!!! Staggering speed.

How can he run 10k at that pace and only come third? jeez.

I can sympathise with you on the Hammers. I’m a Charlton supporter, for my sins. You and I seem to have swapped managers this year, and I can’t see it doing either of us any good.

It looks like we’re going down this year, in fact we’re going down so fast we might skip the “championship” and go right down to non-league.

I always carry tissues, no matter what!! More than once I’ve had to sneak off into some bushes (Michelle can attest to that!).

I’m a Norwich supporter (but don’t tell anyone). We also seem to bounce up and down between the premier and first division. We’ll win it one day!

Yep, you defo need that fuel belt – mine has been a god-send so far and I won’t even go on a 10k run without it at the moment. A you can always trust the stomach pains to ruin a good run grrrrrr

I’m surprised BB hasn’t given you more s*** about being a WH fan….he’s a Wolves man (but having said that, he knows where your blog is now lol)
