Pedals … now, or later?

By ajh

I had a phone call yesterday saying that the cycling shoes, cleats and pedals I ordered are available, and when would I like to bring the bike in for fitting? Now, I have my first triathlon next Sunday, so can’t decide whether I should do it now, or wait. I don’t think 5-6 days is enough time to get confident with the feeling of being connected to the bike, and then go race. Also, as the tri bike leg is only 10km, I’m not sure if I will get anywhere enough benefit from the “proper pedals” to make up for the fact that it will mean I’ll have to change shoes in T2 (see I’m even using the tri lingo now – T2 is transition 2, between the bike and the run).

We went for a trip down to Geelong today to visit family (Adrienne’s mum and my mum and dad).

Bike ride tonight was 5 laps of my normal 6km running loop, just under 29km in just over an hour. A nice ride, didn’t push it too hard.

At this mornings weigh-in I was 72.3kg, that’s 2.3kg down on last week, and the lightest I’ve been since July of last year. Now before you say – “Well done on the weight loss”, I’m not sure I really wanted to lose 2.3kg in a week (or at all for that matter). I suspect a lot of it may be fluid loss as I haven’t been a good boy this week with drinking water. I’ve had a couple of big weeks exercise wise, so need to keep up the fluid intake.

I think that’s a wise decision Andrew. Mind you, I’m sure you’ll really benefit from the cleats in the long run.

That is a huge weight loss. You know, you really do need to eat as well, that’s the benefit of all the exercise we do.

I’d probably wait until after Sunday – that’ll give me a race report AND a first cleat-ride report to enjoy!

Not that I an authority, but I would wait until after Sunday. You don’t want to have any added stress on the day.

I have to say it, you are such a show-off with your weight loss  Why can’t I lose 2.3kg in a week, I would welcome any loss no matter what the reason is……. its just not flipping fair!!

Yeah, wait until after Sunday. You don’t want any embarrassing falling-off-the-bike incidents. Trust me I know exactly how embarrassing that is!

Give yourself a couple of weeks to get ready. They WILL make a big difference.

Probably a good idea to wait, although once you have had the cleats fitted you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

To answer your question I’d say definitely faster in the open water – to the point where I was questioning if the 50m laps were actually 50m today, I thought they must have been shorter because it seemed to take hardly any time to complete them! Having said that, I probably wasn’t heaps quicker if I timed it. I guess the salt water improves your “floatability” and makes it that much easier. have you been practicing your sighting at the pool???

I’m not sure about the one piece yet – they’re not the most flattering of outfits
