Port Fairy – Day 2

By ajh

Had planned to start the day with a pre-breakfast walk, but we both decided that was a bit too energetic and stayed in bed a bit longer! As it was a joint decision, I didn’t feel as guilty as I normally do. Breakfast was nice, some great crunchy granola muesli with poached pears, followed by some “gourmet” baked beans and crispy bacon.

We strolled around the town and shops first thing, then we headed out on a bit of a drive down the west coast stopping at The Crags, Yambuck Lake and the big electrical wind farm.

This is me on a big slide at Yambuck Lake – it looked like fun, but actually was a bit boring as it wasn’t very slippery – at least running up the stairs was some exercise!

These are some of the big windmills that are part of the wind farm – they are huge. Amazingly, it says that fourteen of these generate enough power into the electricity grid to power 11,000 houses.

We returned to Port Fairy and had a nice, healthy lunch in a local cafe (I had a pumpkin and cous cous burger), then headed down to the beach. I went in for a swim, but not a very long one. The waves were not very big, and weren’t nice clean ones that leant themselves to bodysurfing, and the water was chock full of seaweed. After than we went for a walk / run along the beach. That is Adrienne walked and I ran, running out in front of her then doubling back to meet her, and repeat. All up we ran / walked for about 45 minutes, but I only ran for about half that – running bare feet along the beach in the shallows was nice, but I started to feel it in my calves and achilles, probably because it is so different without the support of the running shoes?

Edit: I forgot to say we also fitted in a game of mini-golf today. It’s no wonder I forgot about it though because it was very forgettable, the scores were so high we didn’t even bother adding them up – I’ve no idea who won!

The fish & chips were lovely. What is better than a nice fish & chip shop where you can sit outside and eat them out of the paper, and get a nice glass of red!

After the fish & chips we needed a walk, so decided to walk back up through town. As we approached one of the main intersections we noticed a police car with it’s lights flashing. We were hoping there hadn’t been an accident, but as we got closer we found they had the main street blocked off for some sheep dog trials! The dogs were brilliant.

We’ve decided to have fish and chips tonight for tea – yum!

Hehehehe – you actually look like your bum is stuck to the slide and you’re having to force yourself down

    Not much fun at all!

PS I don’t mean it in a “your bum is big and you’re wedged in” sort of way

That “walk/run” thing always makes me think of walking the dog .. it runs on ahead and then comes back. My nephews are much the same when I take them running.

Enjoy your holiday Andrew. It sounds lovely.
