From today’s Herald Sun;
A fast-food chain’s sale of a 4520-kilojoule hamburger is irresponsible and a sign the industry is ignoring health warnings about obesity, experts say.
TV commercials are promoting the Hungry Jack’s Quad Stack Burger, which contains four beef patties, four slices of cheese, two rashers of bacon, barbecue sauce and two sugared buns.
It contains 71g of fat, 34.7g of saturated fat, 1930 milligrams of sodium and 74.8g protein.
The burger, which sells for $5.95, has no salad and the calorie content equates to more than half a woman’s recommended daily energy intake and almost one-third of a man’s.
Dietitian Tanya Lewis said Hungry Jack’s was being irresponsible in selling the new burger.
“I was quite surprised that with so much media about healthy eating and the whole anti-supersize thing that they would come out and do the exact opposite,” she said.
“I wasn’t too impressed when I saw it on the TV, and even the people who watched it with me, who weren’t dietitians, said the same thing. It was a bit like ‘what are they thinking?’.”
“It seems a bit irresponsible to me – even the way they’re marketing it, you would think they might offer a free salad with it to try to even things up but they haven’t even done that.”
Since 2006, the same burger has been sold by the Hungry Jack’s equivalent in the US, Burger King, sparking similar outrage there and across the globe.
Why would you? Why would you sell it? Why would you buy it? Why would you eat it?
Shame. Shame. Shame.
Off my soapbox now.
Exercise at both ends of the day today, up early for a swim, the usual 80 laps or 2km in just under 50 minutes, then a nice spa. After work a slowish 6km loop with Alyssa – 5:42 min/km. We did have a couple of Jelly Beans at about the half-way mark and they seemed to go down okay.

Agree 110% it is absolutely irresponsible. Mind you it goes both ways people need to take personal responsibility for what they eat.

I saw that in the paper today and couldn’t understand the fuss – if you go to the supermarket and see the crap ppl have in their trolleys, that burger is prolly a healthy choice by comparison (and at least it’s high in protein!).
Btw I loved the bit in the article about it having no salad. Like if you added a bit of soggy lettuce and tomato, it’d be so much better.

yep- its worse because unfortunately there are so many people who ignore health rsks and will have it-kinda just to annoy all of the people who think its bad-if that makes sense! i know what i mean anyway
theyre probably also the paeople(who often after talking to me) go yeah- with those injuries- thats exactly why i dont exercise- i HATE THAT COMMENT-heard it again today!!!

Yeah, it’s bad, but in a way it’s better than living in a completely nanny state. People need to learn to take responsibility for what they put in their mouths.
I might set up a stall next to Hungry Jack’s selling Rennies. I’d make a killing.

I quite like the idea of the calorie labelling that’s going on in NY.
It’s all very well saying it’s a choice but some people have no idea how bad that is.

Consumer demand – if people buy it HJ will sell it – if not the burger will disappear.

Well, personal responsibility plays a pretty big part, I don’t really have a problem with them selling it but you’d have to be a freaking moron to eat one, but then again anyone who would eat one would probably think I am a freaking moron for running. To each their own.
But if I was a cow I would be pretty pissed off to be slaughtered just to make that crap.

I just feel dirty after eating Maccas/Hungry jacks. I don’t know how eating that shit could make people feel good.
I agree with andrewe, people generally have no idea about how many kilojoules in a serving vs. daily requirements.

I have no idea why anyone would …. I hate hamburgers (all of them). One of the many things I dislike which people expect a person of my size to eat!
