Someone once said that only one thing is certain, and that is change. We are going through quite a few changes at work at the moment. Technology changes. Organisational changes. Job changes. Role changes. Some people thrive on change, others struggle. I think I handle change reasonably well, try to look for the opportunity, welcome the new-ness, always looking for the positive. But there is no question it is hard work. A number of difficult conversations have had to be had with some who can’t or won’t accept that change is inevitable. These conversations can be long and wearing.
There were some quotations on change on one of Kirk’s blog entries the other day that I thought were wonderful, I particularly like the Deming quote.
“If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.”
- Mary Engelbreit
“It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.”
- W. Edwards Deming
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”
- Victor Frankl
“All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward.”
- Ellen Glasgow
How well do you handle changes in your life?
What a beautiful day it was today. A perfect evening for a bike ride. I did my Greenvale-Strathmore-Roxburgh Park-Greenvale loop, just over 30 km at about 28 km/hr average speed.

Jinx! I always struggle with change, but the more I do it, the easier it gets. If I make it to 80 years old I’ll be so used to it I will welcome it with open arms!

I think it was Shelley who came up with the quote you referenced.
I actually think I’m quite risk averse so am a bit uncomfortable with change at first. However, if I can see a benefit then I’m quite likely to embrace it.

I know just how you feel, same thing happening at my work but my team seem to want to cling together in the cold, deserted alleyway of stubbourness. All I hear is complaining and it takes a lot of energy and focus to separate yourself from them – but it’s worth it because you get to have your own happiness instead of being sucked into the vortex of negativity.

I used to have a problem with change and progression…..mostly to do with fear and lack of self-esteem. Now I embrace change a lot more.

Have you read Victor Frankl’s book Man’s Search For Meaning? It’s a very good read, quite thought provoking but heavy going too.
Just catching up on all you’ve been up to while I’ve been out of the loop. Hope you don’t come down with anything!!
