Gazza is gone …

Well, finally we all know what we’ve all known for months. Gary Ablett Jnr is going to the new Gold Coast Suns. People have been asking me all afternoon how I feel about it. Answer is ambivalent really. Somewhere in between wishing him well and hoping for an injury in his first game! Seriously though, when you look at the ridiculous money he’s been offered ($1.9m per year for five years), how could Geelong compete with that? It raises questions in my mind about the salary cap system and how much (or how little) the other players are going to be paid. It has been said that we should thank him for the years of brilliant football he’s given us, but I can’t help the major feeling I have about him at the moment being of money-grabbing disloyalty. Does that make me a bad person?

That said, I think that Geelong have the players to cover his loss, and will continue on strongly next year.

For me, just a 30 minute home workout tonight, then two late meetings tonight that will keep me up until midnight.

They are already calling him a legend! WT@ – his father was a legend one of the very best- you’re right it begs the question – how could any side afford him within their caps. I think the AFL has to be questioned here.

Yes, but do you have a coach?

I think you’ll be competitive for a while still, but nowhere near as good as you have been in the last 3-4 years. A couple of other teams had already figured out how to beat you, and now the coach and best player are leaving….

Not being a ‘die hard’ footy fan here are some comments from the outer …….

He has played 192 games with Geelong – so maybe for him a change was needed
New club = new challenges … and it is the challenge that motivates
Football is a business and Gary needs to secure his financial future … take the money and enjoy the sun.
A football club is not about one person .. Geelong will get over this.

Anyway – cycling is far more interesting .. 🙂

at least he was honest enough to say it was the money that tempted him. it’s a ridiculous amount of money to pay someone but for $1.9 million a year, I’d pretty much do anything!

Gotta step out of his dad’s shadow, too.
Good luck to him, I say.

Well good luck Andrew for 2011.
I do like Geelong, and therefore hope they do well, but I think they’re going to slide unless they recruit really well.
Why? The core group is getting old now, and losing a bit of pace when the younger teams go hard at them. Look at Collingwood, and Carlton earlier. How to counter the play-on style has been worked out. Geelong need a back-up style.
They’ll need a decent coach too.
What’s happening in Singapore later this year?
