Perfect weekend …

Back home after an absolutely perfect weekend away. Easily the best weekend away we have had for absolutely ages. The place we stayed was absolutely idyllic and played a huge part in the lovely weekend. It was called Lemonade Creek Cottages, and is about a 10 minute drive out of Lorne on the road to Erskine Falls. There are six self-contained cottages, set in the most delightful gardens, filled with beautiful, native birds – as you can imagine I was in a “photographer’s heaven”.

The best thing about the place was the peace and quiet, absolutely no noise other than that of nature, no noise from other guests, no noise from the road, just the chirping of birds. The cottages themselves are like small houses, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, well appointed lounge with lots of magazines (even a few Popular Photography magazines I hadn’t read), books and a TV/DVD (which I’m happy to say didn’t even get turned on for the whole weekend), and a double spa.

As you can see above there was a delightful swimming pool, which I had a gorgeous swim in on Saturday afternoon, there is also a tennis court which we used too. The weather was absolutely perfect, mid to high 20’s both days, and only a few sprinkles of rain very early this morning.

The people who run the cottages are very friendly, and threw in a few lovely little touches like welcome messages on the chalkboard in the room, box of chocolates on the bed, bottle of wine and cheese and biscuits in the fridge – awesome stuff. Of course, it being Febfast, the bottle of wine went untouched!

The cottages are linked to Erskine Falls by the Lemonade Creek Track, an 8km return bush walk which we did Saturday morning. A great walk, through tree fern lined forest, again with beautiful bird life in abundance.

Lorne is one of my favourite places as we went there a lot when I was young, and holidayed there many times with our kids when they were young. However, over the last 10 years, it certainly has got very busy and “trendy” too. So, staying out a little bit, going into Lorne for a meal, or for a walk on the beach, and then retreating back to Lemonade Creek Cottages was the perfect arrangement.

We didn’t exactly eat “well”, having fish and chips and pizza, both nights getting take-away and eating on the picnic tables on the beach front. This was far nicer than a restaurant meal we thought, and both nights we had crowds of Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos on the table wanting some of our meal!

Over the weekend my camera certainly got a workout, I nearly got to 600 photos taken. I’ve got a bit of processing and sorting out to do. There are lots of nice shots, and lots of dross. The beautiful bird life and garden gave me plenty of opportunity to use the telephoto and macro lenses, so I will bore you with the best shots over the next week or so, but here is one I’m particularly happy with, again it’s all about right-place, right-time isn’t it.

Anyway, we think Lemonade Creek Cottages is the nicest place we have ever stayed, so if you’re looking for a quiet weekend (or longer) retreat, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
